Care Migration

In Germany´s nursing sector, there is a significant shortage of nurses. Experts estimate that by 2025 another 150,000 new nurses will be needed. To overcome this insufficiency, the German government has established a recruitment programm for qualified healthcare personnel from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunesia and the Philippines, all of them countries with a similar standard of training, but a high level of unenmployment among nurses.

Jasminka Bajric and Arnela Memic - both from Sarajevo, Bosnia - joined this programm to work as geriatric nurses in Germany. They left their homes and families, hoping to escape the bad economic situation in their homecountry, and to create a better future for themselves and also their families by sending remmitances.

The portraits show Jasminka Bajric and Arnela Memic before their departure, and after a few weeks in Germany.
